During syllabus week, I asked my friends what their professors were saying about ChatGPT, and the vibes were decidedly bad. “A word to the wise: DO NOT BE TEMPTED by Open AI platforms such as ChatGPT,” reads the syllabus of Archaeology and the Bible. “Do not rely on ChatGPT to complete this assignment,” said an Introduction to Global Health assignment description.

We are living in a digital world, and there is no escape. Like the bionic limbs of science fiction, cellphones feel like extensions of the hands that hold them. Earbuds and headphones, virtual reality headsets and Google Glasses may as well be the cyborg exoskeleton. We are no longer people but the disembodied eyes and ears of the Metaverse witnessing the speedy expansion of the Internet Age, which will one day render all humanity obsolete with automation. This is a worry of mine and a goal for the computer scientist who believes that technology can optimize all aspects of life.
Chat AI, recently released in November 2022, is a large language model that provides highly detailed responses to almost any prompt of your imagination (given that it’s appropriate). Once I got past the initial disbelief of Chat AI’s capabilities, I quickly became fascinated. A couple of minutes of playing with it made me realize that Chat AI is no Siri.
