Cornell’s clocktower will remain under construction until November 2024, closing the 161-step tower to visitors and reducing the Cornell Chimes’ concert schedule.
Cornell Chimes is carrying on with chimesmasters continuing to climb McGraw Tower’s 161 steps to play classic and contemporary tunes for all of central campus.
“It is an honor to be able to have a piece played for the whole campus, but I think it more feels like I’m deeply connected to the larger musical culture on campus,” Drake Eshleman ’20 told The Sun.
If you were one of the students drawn to Ho Plaza by the mysterious sounds generated from atop of McGraw Tower on Sunday, rest assured that our beloved chime bells are not malfunctioning. Instead, it was the rehearsal for a chimes and whale song duet.
From The Wizard of Oz to Harry Potter, “My Old Cornell” to John Lennon, the Cornell Chimes celebrated its birthday with music spanning across its 150-year history.
The Cornell Chimes — a set of 21 bells housed in McGraw Tower — will celebrate its 150 year anniversary during this year’s homecoming weekend with a special narrated concert and a chimesmasters reunion for the classes of 1965 to 2021.
The chimesmasters have picked three new Grateful Dead songs to add to this year’s the setlist, in addition to the five played last year.
