John P.A. Greenwood ’20 struck a plea deal with the county’s top prosecutor in what amounts to a drastic reduction from the charges the prosecutor brought against Greenwood five months ago.
The new attorney for the Cornell student charged with a hate crime said his client never touched the victim, that he took a lie detector test proving so and that he is on leave but plans to return to Cornell.
The prosecutor said in court documents that Greenwood targeted the victim, a black junior at Cornell and punched him “in the face with a closed fist.”
John Greenwood ’20, the white student accused of beating a black Cornell student and calling him the N-word, will not be arraigned until December.
Prosecutors will present grand jurors with New York’s hate crime law and let them decide whether to charge a student under the statute, the district attorney told The Sun.
“In the fullness of time I am confident that the truth of what happened will be clear,” the 19-year-old Cornell sophomore said.
Ithaca Police on Tuesday identified the Cornell student charged with assault following a recent Collegetown altercation in which a black Cornell student said he was called the N-word and punched in the face.
