Imogene Powers Johnson ’52, widow of Samuel C. Johnson ’50, died on Saturday at the age of 87. Johnson is the namesake for the Imogene Powers Johnson Center for Birds and Biodiversity and a trustee.
The former professor died Jan. 8 of kidney failure at his home in Herndon, Virginia. He was 96.
Maurice Hinchey, who represented Ithaca for 20 years and once shipped acid rain and a tree to Reagan, died at 79.
As a professor, his primary educational interests were in the fields of antitrust, corporations, law and economics.
Dowd told students that a Cornell education was “boring and wasteful” in 1969, The Sun reported at the time, and said, “people are being crippled here.” The only thing that makes life interesting, he said, is the “ability to use your mind,” and he blamed the culture of Cornell largely on students and faculty.
