The women’s rowing team wrapped up a successful season this past weekend at the Cornell Autumn Classic scrimmage. After working on the water since the season began shortly after freshman move in day, the team transitions into winter conditioning.
Eisser’s boat claimed fifth place with a time of 6:57.67, behind Germany — who earned gold with a time of 6:49.39 — and Netherland and Poland, winning silver and bronze, respectively.
At the end of the day, Will Oprea is a die-hard Cornellian and cares about nothing more than the success of the lightweight rowing program.
In the midst of Cornell’s men’s and women’s rowing teams’ racing seasons, the three teams have much to look forward to at the end of the season when their most crucial races take place.
All three Cornell rowing teams raced against competition ranked two or higher.
Watching the tape of one of his boats’ races, Cornell men’s rowing head coach Todd Kennett said he was impressed with the men’s power, but upset at their form and decision-making. Nevertheless, he was well aware of how well his boats had raced this past weekend. His team defended its grasp on the Goes Cup and Stagg Points Plate over Syracuse and Navy. “This is the first time since [the 1970s] that we won three years in a row,” he said. All three Red rowing teams were in action this last weekend.

The Cornell men’s heavyweight and lightweight rowing teams will be in action this weekend at the Head of the Charles Regatta. The event, held annually on Boston’s Charles River, will feature some of the best rowing teams from around the world. Cornell will square off against other college teams and several national teams.
“National teams are always a nice benchmark and this race will help us gauge what we are capable of doing this year,” said heavyweight senior captain Gregory Davis. Cornell will compete in the 4+ and 8+ championships. Both the heavyweight and lightweight teams have a lot of experienced rowers, so they are hoping for quality results.
This weekend, the women’s rowing team will head to Cambridge to compete in the Head of the Charles, the world’s largest two-day rowing event. While the NCAA season does not begin for the Red until the spring, the squad still has a group of races this fall, with the Head of the Charles being the first and arguably most important. However, there are some key differences between races in the fall and spring. The biggest difference is that the fall races are much longer — a 5,000 meter course compared to just a 2,000 meter course later this year. Therefore, the Head of the Charles is really a place for the Red to show off its stamina and endurance, rather than focusing on its sprint abilities.
When you’re competing for the title of “World Champions,” second place is pretty darn good.
Facing incredible talent and competition, the U.S. lightweight-8 boat glided into a second-place finish yesterday during the grand finals at the World Rowing Championships in Poznan, Poland. Aboard the boat representing the U.S. was current Cornell coxswain Kerry Quinn ’10 along with recent Cornell graduates Andrew Diebold ’06 and Matt Kochem ’08. The three were selected for the national team following an intense qualifying and training period this past summer in Princeton, N.J.
The U.S. and Italy were the favored boats coming into the championship race after winning their individual qualifying heats the previous Sunday.
