Ten Forward Café definitely showed that vegan food can achieve a wide variety of flavors and doesn’t have to be bland or boring, as it’s sometimes perceived to be.
Although I did not try the sandwiches, salads and other food options they offer, based on the couple of items I did try, I was not that impressed.
Maybe I’m just a silly American who should learn to appreciate the fine, fleshy delicacies of French cuisine. Maybe there’s a vast network of vegetarian and vegan restaurants I’ve missed while intoxicated in a cheesy haze.
But if French cuisine is to continue to be heralded as amongst the most refined in the world, it should start refining its vegetarian, vegan and other diet-restricted dishes.
After being a vegan for two years, I have found many ways to take the simplest of foods and combine them in order to make something “fun” that my friends would not even know is vegan.
To be clear, this is not an article on the morals of going vegan. For my purposes, I really don’t care about the ethical background of not eating animal products. I care about weighing the costs and benefits and documenting my week-long vegan journey.
I am not trying to convince anyone to adopt a vegan lifestyle — I myself am not a vegan. I just want to shed some light (albeit, very minimal and incomplete light) on why a million people in America choose to live the way they do, in spite of the many inconveniences such a lifestyle engenders.
