The Red fell to 2-4 on the season as it dropped two close 5-set heartbreakers in its annual Cornell Invitational.
“I hope we can play as a team again like we did this past week and just play as a whole, and have fun for the last two games, [especially] for our seniors too.”
With only one more set needed, the Red was in position to defeat the Lions swiftly. However, Columbia did not go down without a fight. The Lions went on to win the next two sets, both with a final score of 25-22.
Although the Red fell short in the match, its blocking and kills kept it in the fight. Sydney Moore led the team with a new record of six blocks, while Bennett, Baptiste, Hanan and Casey Justus also contributed.
Playing at Bartels Hall again for the first time in nearly two years, the women’s volleyball team hosted the Cornell Invitational.
“I thought we played really well,” Joanna Chang said. “Coming back from two years of not playing and to win the tournament, I thought we were pretty good.”
In each of their past three seasons, the Red have finished third in the Ivy League rankings. In a preseason poll, the Red were voted to finish third once again this season.
Cornell recovered from a string of disappointing conference losses to down the Green, and then the Crimson, by 3-1 margins — reviving expectations for volleyball’s season, now ranked third in the Ivy League.
Cornell handily dispatched Lamar and San Antonio, but faltered against Houston and Houston Baptist.
Sun staff writer Smita Nalluri spoke with senior co-captains Carla Sganderlla and Kara Rogers to discuss Cornell women’s volleyball and their upcoming season. Sganderlla and Rogers gave thoughts on the 2017-18 season, expanding their team chemistry, and a catchy new motto.
