While postseason college basketball was canceled last week, the end of a largely uninspiring season for Cornell women’s basketball came two weeks prior, after the team suffered a loss for their final game of the season to Princeton, 69-50.
“The team is so special to me,” Senior Reena Olsen said. “The sense of family we have established on the team is something I would never want to give up.”
Harvard trailed 24-5 after a monstrous 20-1 run sparked by junior guard Kate Sramac, who shot 3-for-3 from long range during the run, while the home team shot 2-of-12.
In two tough Ivy contests, the Red faced Harvard on Friday night, taking a heavy loss, followed by Dartmouth on Saturday — with a heartbreaking gap of only two points from the win. For the Harvard game, star senior captains, guard/forward Samantha Widmann and forward Laura Bagwell-Katalinich, reached double-digit scores for Cornell. However, the team lacked cohesion and didn’t have enough members contributing to the scoreboard to tip the scale in the Red’s favor. Cornell saw a much closer battle against Dartmouth the following night. Bagwell-Katalinich started the game on a high note, scoring the first two points for the Red.
Reflecting the Red’s dismal performance in its first game of the doubleheader, no players scored in double digits, while Cornell converted only seven field goals and two three-pointers. Overall, it shot a mere 15.6 percent from the field and 15.4 percent of three-pointers.
The Red had some standout players, with three reaching double-digit scoring. Widmann had 20 points, Sramac 14 and Mulroy finished with 10. Widmann also showed her prowess with two steals, a block and six rebounds and assists for the night.
By the end of the second quarter, Widmann passed the century mark in points, becoming the 15th Cornell player ever to accomplish such a feat. She scored nine points while staying on the court for a team-high of 43 minutes, leading the Red to its first league victory.
