After five consecutive matchups without a win, Cornell women’s soccer finally snagged its first Ivy League victory against Yale on Saturday in 90 minutes of hard fought gameplay on both sides.
The Red is preparing for highly anticipated matchups against Harvard and Colgate, after moving through three games without picking up a win. The team has lost both of its Ivy League contests thus far, and facing the Crimson and the Raiders will not be any easier.
Now with a record of three wins, five losses and one draw, Cornell is looking to bounce back from its losing record and face even tougher competition.
Despite the tough challenge, the team as a whole is excited by the prospect of playing a top 25 team.
After starting its season with a tie and a loss, the women’s soccer team will split its time this weekend: traveling to Lehigh on Friday before returning to face Manhattan College at home on Sunday.
“We feel pretty confident coming into the weekend and think we can come away with a few wins,” said junior forward Lena Russomagno. “A lot of us are frustrated after some of the results last weekend and we are just looking to beat some teams and end on a good note.”
The Mountain Hawks (1-1-0) started their season with a 3-1 victory over Nebraska, followed by a 1-0 loss to Virginia Tech.
“I think Lehigh is definitely beatable for us,” said sophomore defender Sam Wright.
The women’s soccer team could not utilize its home field advantage and went without a win this weekend, earning instead a scoreless tie against Binghamton on Friday and a 3-1 loss to Niagara on Sunday.
“I thought we played good soccer but it was disappointing because we made some rookie mistakes that caused us to give up goals. We really showed inexperience,” said head coach Danielle LaRoche.
The women’s soccer team starts off its season this weekend, playing host to Binghamton today, and then traveling to face Niagara on Sunday.
“We are just excited to play,” said junior co-captain Lena Russomagno. “After preseason, after practicing a lot, we are just excited to get out there and show what we’ve got and show what we’ve been doing in practice.”
The Red’s first matchup will be against Binghamton, a team that’s coming off a pair of losses last weekend at Delaware and Saint Joseph’s. Binghamton edges out Cornell in the series between the teams, 1-0-1, and tied Cornell the last time the two teams met, back in 2004.
The women’s soccer team pushed Saturday night’s game against Dartmouth into overtime. The Green delivered the last goal, however, leaving the Red with a 3-2 loss in its last game of the season.
“[Head coach Danielle LaRoche] said before the game that we wanted to end the season how we want to start next season,” said freshman forward Brook Chang.
The Green (8-6-2, 2-4-1 Ivy) arrived on Berman Field ready to end its season on a positive note, while the Red (2-12-1, 1-6) was fired up to gain a win for Cornell’s lone senior, captain Whitney Stich.
Coming into the final stretch of the season, the women’s soccer team is hoping to end the season on a winning note as it faces Dartmouth tomorrow afternoon on Berman Field. This will be the final opportunity for this team to play together, as senior Whitney Stich will play her last match for the Red tomorrow.
Although the Red (2-11-1, 1-5 Ivy) lost its matchup last weekend against Princeton, the squad is hoping to utilize the strategies and tactics that it learned this season and apply them to the last game of the season.
“This year has gone by really fast,” said sophomore goaltender Jodi Palmer. “I think we have learned so much about playing as a team and what it is going to take to be successful next year.”
