“It was so exciting to win the all-around title,” Beers said. “I was genuinely surprised when my name was called.”
The team’s new young talent has wasted no time making an immediate impact. One such newcomer is freshman Kate Michelini. Michelini has had a hot start to the 2022 season, recording two top ten all-time Cornell scores in the first home dual meet of the season against West Chester.
Each of the six Cornell gymnasts to compete on floor outperformed or tied their Brown counterparts — and Cornell was the only team to break 49.000 in the event.
The Ivy rival traveled to Ithaca on Sunday to battle it out in Newman Arena at Bartels Hall. Cornell earned just 187.95 points to Penn’s whopping 192.4 points.
The Red earned three team first-place finishes — in vault, floor and beam, earning 48.125, 47.650 and 48.550 points, respectively. Cornell also earned second place on bars, with a 45.025 finish.
“It was a fantastic meet and considering all the injuries and all the setbacks we’ve had, it was a great way to end our season,” Hall said.
“[Receiving a 10 has] only happened to one other person,” Hall said. “Only two people in school history got a ten from a judge.”
The team has struggled on beam throughout the season and scored an overall 47.075 on Saturday. During the Rutgers meet, however, they redeemed themselves with a markedly improved 48.300 score.
The Red will hold its first meet at Bartels Hall of the season next Sunday.
Showing marked improvement on the beam, the Red topped its season high and edged out Yale.
