“Their theme was ‘Light up Mansfield’ and our theme was ‘Cornell Lights up Mansfield.'”
Cornell welcomed Caldwell to collegiate sprint football with a 48-20 thrashing at Schoellkopf.
Cornell will begin its first season under head coach Bob Gneo on Friday evening at Schoellkopf Field.
2017 will be a year of transitions for Cornell sprint football, including the introduction of head coach Bob Gneo and a pair of changes to the CSFL.
Cornell led 20-12 before Penn quarterback Mike McCurdy orchestrated a touchdown drive in the final minute to time the game and send the contest to overtime.
After a couple weeks of rest, the Red is looking to bounce back after a pair of tough losses against Chestnut Hill and Army.
As sprint football entered its weekend matchup, the Army Black Knights (3-1) were billed to be a formidable opponent, and Cornell (1-3) quickly learned that playing at West Point was as difficult as they expected. The Knights, who won the CSFL last season, took the contest, 43-12, after a dominant first quarter in which Army scored on all four of its possessions. Prior to the matchup, co-head coach Terry Cullen indicated that senior quarterback Robert Pannullo would take the majority of snaps under center. However, after the Red could only muster a net of 15 yards on its four first quarter drives, Pannullo was repositioned to wide receiver, and sophomore Connor Ostrander took over as quarterback. “Ostrander made some plays right when he got into the game, so we decided to move Pannullo to wide receiver and let Ostrander keep playing quarterback,” co-head coach Bart Guccia said.
Following a close loss to Chestnut Hill (1-2) last week, Cornell (1-2) now turns its attention to reigning CSFL champion, Army (2-1). The Red travels to West Point tomorrow night.
After a scoreless 20 minutes, Cornell found its groove. In less than 10 minutes, the Red scored three touchdowns — two runs and a 47-yard pass. After getting out to such a lead, Cornell would not look back.
