Wrestling Looks to Defend Title

The big, digital countdown clock on the wall of the Friedman Wrestling Center is slowly ticking down the days left before the NCAA Championships. Today, the clock said 13; this weekend, when the team travels to Penn for the EIWA Championships it will say 11. The Championships are qualifiers for Nationals, and as such are an extremely important part of the process of being ready for the NCAAs, and the Red, currently ranked No. 2 in the country, will be pulling out all the stops to come away with its third straight team title, as well as NCAA berths in as many weight classes as possible.

League Offices Award All-Ivy Honors to Eight Red Wrestlers

Resting on their laurels is not something the members of the wrestling team are accustomed to doing. Frankly, they don’t have time, what with the EIWA Championships coming up next weekend and the NCAAs later in March. But, perhaps, they could take a second this week to give themselves a few good slaps on the back, following the announcement of the eight Red named to the All-Ivy team, four of them unanimous first-teamers. Red wrestlers also took home All-Ivy Wrestler of the year and Rookie of the Year honors, which were awarded to sophomore Mack Lewnes and freshman Cam Simaz, respectively.

Men’s Lacrosse to Take On Army at West Point

The sun came out of hiding yesterday, and in an uncharacteristic gesture of goodwill, embraced the men’s lacrosse team with its tepid —but very welcome — rays. While not technically its season opener owing to the team’s dominant, 18-6, win last week over Binghamton, the Red will not have much time to enjoy Ithaca’s spontaneous hot flash, as it will be traveling to West Point this Saturday for what is essentially the team’s first real challenge of the season. No. 4/6 Cornell (1-0) will be challenging the home team, Army (1-1), which is coming off a tough, 17-6, loss last week to No. 1/2 Syracuse. Wrestling Squad Values ‘Bench’

Had you read the recap of the Red’s last home wrestling match this past weekend, a 26-9 win over Ivy rival Penn, you would have found three seniors mentioned in the match highlights. But had you actually attended the event at packed Friedman Wrestling Center, you would have watched five seniors step out into the center of the ring to be honored as Cornell’s Class of 2009. And while Tim Ironman and Drake Hovis may not be suited up and wrestling in official dual matches every weekend, they have played an integral part during their years with the squad, just as starters Jordan Leen, Steve Anceravage and Zach Hammond have.

Cornell Hosts Final Home Meet Against Princeton, Penn

Sometimes teams will go into a match with butterflies in their stomachs, fear in their eyes and sweat already starting to lubricate their clenched fists. And sometimes they don’t. The wrestling squad should be the latter this weekend when it suits up for their second Ivy match of the season, a contest against Princeton (2-13, 5-1 EIWA) tomorrow. The next day, however, should be a bit more challenging for the Red, as they take on Penn (1-5, 5-1 EIWA), the closest thing to a rival Cornell (8-2, 1-0 EIWA)has among its Ancient Eight competitors.

Remembering Coach Collins-Parker

The walls of volleyball head coach Deitre Collins-Parker’s corner office were mostly bare Monday when I knocked on the halfway opened door. Deitre was obviously in the process of packing up the last of her stuff — a dejected black mini-fridge stood, unplugged, in front of her desk, and piles of office paraphernalia lay in haphazard heaps. In front of the dark monitor, a row of unopened Slimfast shakes stood quietly. It was their last day too, after all.

Volleyball Coach Leaves Cornell

An office stands vacant today in Bartels Hall, as the Red bade a final goodbye yesterday to a highly decorated coach — and an award-winning athlete in her own right — Deitre Collins-Parker, the Wendy Schaenen ’79 head coach of Cornell volleyball. Collins-Parker’s last full day was yesterday, and she will soon be flying cross country in order to settle into her new position, as head coach of San Diego State. Wrestling Ratchets Up Intensity in Practice

Almost every team, no matter what the sport, will inevitably go through a series of peaks and valleys, sometimes emotional, sometimes physical, and sometimes both. The wresting team experienced what can only be described as a valley in its season over the past couple of weeks, following a mediocre performance three weeks ago against Eastern Michigan and then a 16-14 loss to Missouri two weeks ago. But following last weekend’s dominating 32-7 win over Tennessee-Chattanooga, it seems the Red may have left that valley for good.
This Sunday the team travels to Columbia or its 12 p.m. kick off to the Ivy season against the 1-2 Lions, and then will get right back on its bus and drive to Hofstra in Hempstead, N.Y for a 5 p.m. contest against the 3-1 Pride.

Men’s Wrestling Erases Memories of Last Weekend in Tenn.

Wrestling head coach Rob Koll likes to downplay the importance of individual dual matches during the regular season, choosing instead to look at the big picture — that his team peaks in time to be at its absolute highest level of performance in time for the NCAA championships. But it would have been impossible to not be disappointed — frustrated, even — by the team’s loss last weekend at home to then-No. 12 Missouri. The 16-14 loss dropped the Red (6-2) to the No. 3 ranking, and no doubt hurt the team’s pride. It was from this mental standpoint that the team traveled to Chattanooga, Tenn. to take on the Mocs (11-8) in MacLellan Gym yesterday.

I’m Not Stalking You, I Promise…

Now, I don’t want anyone to take this the wrong way, but I love, love, LOVE Jeomi Maduka. Yes, Jeomi, you are pretty much my hero. I think you’re the next FloJo, Lisa Leslie and Marion Jones, all wrapped up in one slightly shorter, steroid-free, highly-educated package. In fact, last semester, I wrote the story about you when you were selected by The Sun as 2008’s Athlete of the Year. I see you around campus, walking with your friends between classes or on your way to a workout, and all I want to do is run up to you and ask you to sign my snow boots.
But I don’t.
