C.U. Administration Expands With New Appointments

Provost Biddy Martin’s role has finally expanded beyond her means. Last week, Martin appointed David Harris, vice provost for the social sciences, to the new position of Deputy Provost and promoted Robert Buhrman to Vice Provost of Research.

The role of Deputy Provost is essentially an aide to the Provost, but this is a job that has never been filled.

“It’s a new position at Cornell. To understand what’s going on you have to take a step back and look at the President and the Provost,” Harris said.

Martin explained the necessity of the new appointment, mentioning her growing responsibilities.

This article appears in the 2007 edition of The Sun’s annual Freshman Issue. University officials unveiled plans yesterday for a new addition to the north side of The Herbert F. The construction of the addition, which was part of the original plan for the Museum, will begin in the spring of 2008, according to the press release. I.M. Pei and & Partners — now Pei Cobb Freed & Partners — initially planned to have an addition that was mostly underground, extending into the gorge on the north side of the Museum, with a large picture window overlooking the gorge. However, this is no longer possible.

GPSA Aids Slope Day Funds

Even though Slope Day is drawing near, financial plans for next year’s event have already started, despite issues concerning graduate student funding.

According to Michael Walsh, Graduate and Professional Student Assembly vice president, the GPSA did aid in funding Slope Day this year, contributing the same amount — $4,000 — that they contributed last year. They were unable to provide any further funds due to the fact that the Slope Day Programming Board is not by-line funded by the GPSA.

Burning Question

The Sun published an article yesterday on a new strain of gonorrhea that provoked some thought from students around campus.

Question: “If you had to be an STD for a day, which would you be and why?”
