M. Hockey Unfazed by Recent Losing Streak

“There’s no overreaction from our players or our coaching staff, whether we’ve won three in a row or whether we lost three in a row,” said head coach Mike Schafer ’86. “It’s all about the next game and staying focused on making sure that we’re ready to go.”
According to Schafer, the Red’s (15-6-4, 10-5-3 ECAC Hockey) first three-game losing streak since last February is not a cause for alarm. Coincidentally, Friday night’s contest in Hanover, N.H. marked the first time in two and a half years that Cornell registered four goals and still lost the contest.

Penalty Kill Falters In Loss to Harvard

“It was just one of those nights we didn’t score on the power play and they did,” said head coach Mike Schafer ’86.
Junior forward Colin Greening provided both of the Red’s goals on the night. The co-captain’s first tally came on a nice pass from sophomore forward Joe Devin, who was stationed behind the goal. Devin found Greening between the circles and Greening one-timed a shot past Harvard’s sophomore goalie Ryan Carroll.
“I was really proud of the guys, we came to play and we won a lot of battles,” Greening said. “The only difference is they scored more than us.”

Penalties, Bad Bounces Hurt Red in Wild Overtime Loss

HANOVER, N.H. — Looking to shake up an offense that seemed stagnant without leading scorer senior forward Michael Kennedy, the Red (15-6-4, 10-5-4 ECAC Hockey) came out on Friday with new lines against Dartmouth. The offense seemed to click better than it had in recent weeks, but penalties and a few costly mistakes let the team down in the end as Dartmouth (13-9-3, 10-6-2 ECAC Hockey) won, 5-4, in overtime.

The men’s hockey team suffered another rough loss at the hands of rival Harvard. Junior forward Colin Greening scored two goals and Joe Devin had two assists. Penalties hurt the Red for the second night in a row; Harvard scored all four of its goals on the man advantage.

The men’s hockey team got off to a hot start on Friday night with two goals in the first 8:00 of action at Dartmouth, only to see its lead eaten away by a series of bad bounces and mental errors. When the dust had settled, Dartmouth won the game in overtime, 5-4, on a controversial goal by Joe Gaudet.

M. Icers Head to New England

In its last four games, the No. 7 ranked men’s hockey team has gone just 1-2-1, scoring only four goals in that stretch. Head coach Mike Schafer ’86 and his players are looking to boost their offensive production this weekend, as the squad will travel to Dartmouth tonight and Harvard tomorrow for a pair of road games.
“We have to start getting some grimy goals,” Schafer said. “We have to start getting guys around the net. … We need to get pucks up to our blue line, get it down on the net, get a lot of traffic and put a lot of pressure on the defending teams to pick up around the crease. We need to try to generate more offense that way.”

Barlow Keeps It Ice Cold

When Evan Barlow scored with 2:08 remaining in overtime Friday night to lead the men’s hockey team past Quinnipiac, 2-1, it was just the latest in a string of heroics from the senior forward — who leads the Cornell in game-winners this season and held the team assists title until recently.
In addition to cheers, however, the Strathmore, Alb., native has had cause for frustration over the course of his career — the talent has always been there, but not always the discipline. This paradox was evident from the very beginning.
In the Red’s first regular season game during the 2005-06 season, against Michigan State, the freshman Barlow got his first Cornell point from an assist on goal by line-mate Cam Abbot ‘06. The Red won, 4-2.

M. Icers Beats Quinnipiac On Sudden Death Goal

On Friday, senior forward Evan Barlow’s overtime goal earned a 2-1 victory for Cornell over Quinnipiac, putting the Red back in the win column after a two-game losing streak. Junior defenseman Brendon Nash assisted on Barlow’s goal and added a score of his own to help his team in the win.
Both of the Red’s goals on Friday came in penalty periods; the Red was 2-of-10 on power play opportunities. According to Barlow, the Red’s ability to take advantage of power plays is integral in winning games.

Princeton Capitalizes in Waning Moments to Win At Lynah

The Cornell men’s hockey team (15-4-4, 10-3-3 ECAC) was less than a minute away from a four-point weekend and a sweep of the season series with preseason ECAC Hockey favorite Princeton(17-6-0, 11-5-0 ECAC), when everything fell apart. After being stymied by the Red defense for most of the game, the Tigers scored two quick goals in the last minute of the third period to stun the crowd at Lynah Rink and topple the home team, 2-1.

Sports Update: Barlow's Overtime Goal Lifts Men's Hockey Over Quinnipiac

Men’s Hockey

On Friday night, the Red got back in the win column after last weekend’s 0-1-1 showing. Evan Barlow scored 2:52 into the overtime period to earn a 2-1 Cornell victory over Quinnipiac at Lynah.
Quinnipiac struck early, as Bobcats defenseman Brett Dickinson tallied his first goal of the season to put his team up 1-0 just 1:30 into the game. However, Brendon Nash scored a power-play goal on a slap-shot from the point at 15:10 of the first frame to tie the game up.
The score stayed knotted at one until the end of regulation.
Barlow’s overtime goal was also scored on the power-play, after he received a pass from Brendon Nash and wired a slap-shot on net that went through the legs of Quinnipiac goalie Dan Clarke. Ben Scrivens made 25 saves in the winning effort.
