On Jan. 25, Prof. Bruce Lewenstein, communication, became Cornell’s 13th Ombudsman in a vote by the University Assembly.
For the past 50 years, the Office of the University Ombudsman has been on a mission: solving problems by “meeting people where they are at.”
For Cornellians struggling to break through the complexity of university bureaucracy, they need only turn to the University’s Ombudsman Office — a three-person office founded over 50 years ago to “directly help members of the Cornell community with issues that are affecting their life here,” according to its director, Linda Falkson.
The ombudsman — who is “embedded in the university fabric” and “knows the quasi-legal structure of the university, the administrative, student, faculty, graduate and undergraduate levels” — can help Cornellians in ways that outside counsel could not, argued faculty representative Martin Hatch, professor emeritus of music.
“In light of the current legal and political climate, I think you might see an uptake in international students,” he said, urging the office to use provisions that would provide confidentiality for students.
