After dropping three in a row to Dartmouth, softball’s woes continued into its series against Penn, where defensive mishaps likely cost the team two conference games.
Both games saw the Green win due to an imposing offensive, earning them overall scores of 8-4 and 7-2 in their favor.
Run production hobbled the Red as it squared off against Villanova and Delaware.
The Red defeated the Wildcats once again on Saturday, but suffered three losses over the weekend from opponents Drexel, Stetson, and Tennessee State.
Coming off of a losing 2017 season that saw the team finish at the bottom of its division, Cornell softball was picked to finish last in the Ivy League preseason poll. But head coach Julie Farlow ’97 said the Red is ready to defy expectations. “Being surrounded by these players everyday, I do think we’re capable of finishing much better than [last season],” Farlow said. Since her promotion to head coach in 2016, Farlow has doubled the Red’s league wins and earned a reputation for drafting high-caliber recruiting classes. This year’s sophomore class includes pitcher Lisa Nelson, the team’s strikeout leader, and infielder Bridgette Rooney, the 2017 Ivy League home run leader.
While the losses piled on this year, Farlow believes her team was in many more close games this year than in 2016. The balls just didn’t bounce the Red’s way on numerous occasions.
“We’re a young team that is graduating just two players. A lot of the players who helped us this year will be helping us again next year.”
“The performance that we gave as a team and our season record as a whole does not reflect our talent, skill level, or effort that we have put into preparing for the season.”
Cornell was not able to win the series against Penn, but shined in a 5-0 shutout against the Quakers for its only win of the weekend.
“This weekend we will have to come out ready to play all four games competitively at a high level and will have to execute our plays defensively, attack on the mound and adjust from at-bat to at-bat.”
