Volleyball Drops Three in Season-Opening Tourney

While a lot has changed for the volleyball team, following the Red’s first tournament of the 2009 season, it seems that a lot has also stayed the same. With a new head coach and seven freshmen on the roster, Cornell had a nearly identical start to the season as it did last year, going 0-3 in it’s first tournament, with a 1-9 set record. The lone win came in the opening set against host George Mason, a victory sandwiched between 3-0 shutouts against Morehead State and Kent State at the Patriot Invitational.

V-Ball To Open Season At Patriot Invitational

For the first time ever, Cornell and the rest of the Ivy League will open their non-conference schedules just one week behind the rest of the NCAA, rather than facing the typical two-weekend delay. That’s not the only new thing for Cornell volleyball this season; in addition to welcoming seven freshmen to the squad, Sarah Bernson will debut today as the ninth Wendy Schaenen ’79 Head Coach of Volleyball.
The Red is set to play its first match of the season later today against Morehead State. The team will take on host George Mason and Kent State tomorrow to round out its stay at the Patriot Classic. Just a few short months on the job and Bernson is already excited for the team to get a quick start to the non-conference schedule.

Football Team to Scrimmage Hobart College Tomorrow

It’s official: football season has arrived. ESPN aired its first college football broadcast last night, and local football fans will get their first chance of the year to see the Cornell team in intersquad action tomorrow at noon on Schoellkopf field when the Red will play a scrimmage against Hobart College. In last week’s intrasquad scrimmage, head coach Jim Knowles and his staff polished up the team’s depth chart and shed some light on the ongoing position battles of the preseason. Senior Ben Ganter was named the team’s starting quarterback at the first practice of the preseason, and it appears that senior Randy Barbour will be the team’s featured back for the second year in a row.

M. Soccer Heads to Syracuse for Season Opener

In what men’s soccer head coach Jaro Zawislan deemed “an irony of fate,” the Red will open its 2009 season tomorrow night against his former team and local Cornell rival –– Syracuse.
“It wasn’t planned,” Zawislan said with a laugh. “It was prearranged many years ago that this game was going to be [the] opening game for Cornell men’s soccer, and for Syracuse, the home opener.”
Zawislan spent the past seven seasons as an assistant coach for the Orange before taking over as Bryan Scales’ replacement in April. Since then, he has been working to change the culture of the team and learn as much about the players as possible, while simultaneously organizing intense training sessions in order to maintain a competitive environment.

Newcomers Will See Ample Time in W. Soccer’s Opener

The women’s soccer team starts off its season this weekend, playing host to Binghamton today, and then traveling to face Niagara on Sunday.
“We are just excited to play,” said junior co-captain Lena Russomagno. “After preseason, after practicing a lot, we are just excited to get out there and show what we’ve got and show what we’ve been doing in practice.”
The Red’s first matchup will be against Binghamton, a team that’s coming off a pair of losses last weekend at Delaware and Saint Joseph’s. Binghamton edges out Cornell in the series between the teams, 1-0-1, and tied Cornell the last time the two teams met, back in 2004.

Field Hockey Opens Season in Washington, D.C.

The Cornell field hockey team, under head coach Donna Hornibrook, will open the 2009 season on the road with two games this weekend at American University in Washington, D.C. The Red will face Davidson on Saturday at 2 p.m. and gear up again to play Georgetown Sunday afternoon.

It’s back to the gridiron for us Cornellians, both as students and as fans of that great American tradition — football. But the NFL has been closer to Ithaca during the offseason than you might think.
The New York Jets came to nearby Cortland, N.Y., over the summer for training camp, staying in the area from July 31 to Aug. 22. With only one more game left on the preseason schedule before New York’s opener at Houston Sept. 13, the Jets named highly touted first-round draft pick Mark Sanchez as the starting quarterback just last week.

Volleyball Trains, Bonds as Season Approaches

As the start of the volleyball preseason looms on the horizon, the Red has been working since the thursday of Orientation Week to make sure its senior leadership and its influx of new blood are combining together as smoothly as possible. This year, the freshmen will outnumber the seniors seven to three, rookie head coach Sarah Bernson is looking to hit the ground running, and the team will be starting its season an entire week earlier than in previous years. No one can say that the season will be lacking in excitement.
Following a five-year stint as the Red’s assistant coach, Bernson took over the top spot this year following the departure of former head coach Deitre Collins-Parker for a head coaching position at Sand Diego State.

Men’s Soccer Starts Off 2009 With ‘Clean Slate’

After a frustrating and disappointing 2008 season in which the men’s soccer team posted a 1-15 (0-7 Ivy) record, there will be a lot of differences in the 2009 edition of the squad. Most noticeably, the Red will have a new head coach. After seven seasons as an assistant coach for Syracuse, Jaro Zawislan will be taking over at the helm.
“Having Coach Zawislan is a huge boost for our program,” said junior forward Jeff Zimering. “He’s a highly accomplished former player who’s played professionally in Europe. He brings a wealth of experience to us that should reap benefits for the program. We’re extremely excited to play under his leadership.”

Quinn, Nat’l Team Capture Silver in Poland

When you’re competing for the title of “World Champions,” second place is pretty darn good.
Facing incredible talent and competition, the U.S. lightweight-8 boat glided into a second-place finish yesterday during the grand finals at the World Rowing Championships in Poznan, Poland. Aboard the boat representing the U.S. was current Cornell coxswain Kerry Quinn ’10 along with recent Cornell graduates Andrew Diebold ’06 and Matt Kochem ’08. The three were selected for the national team following an intense qualifying and training period this past summer in Princeton, N.J.
The U.S. and Italy were the favored boats coming into the championship race after winning their individual qualifying heats the previous Sunday.
