The women’s hockey team heads to Hanover, NH tomorrow night to face the Green. On Sunday, Cornell will face the University of Vermont in Burlington. The Red is coming off of its first ECAC win of the season against Yale this past weekend, and is looking to continue the trend. When asked whether her team could maintain its current play, head coach Melody Davidson responded, “Oh, for sure. This team has to be given full credit. Nobody in there would let anybody quit.” The Red will not be able to relax against either Dartmouth or Vermont, however. Dartmouth is currently ranked fourth in the nation, and has a plethora of high scorers. Vermont, on the other hand, has had a poor season, but the Catamounts will be hungry for their first ECAC win. Vermont also has a bona fide star in senior goaltender Tiffany Hayes. Hayes has a .916 save percentage this season. “We’re just going to go in and play the same way we did against Princeton in terms of physicality, not give up the early goals, obviously, try to finish when we get the chance [like we did against Yale], and keep the score as tight as we can,” explained Davidson. The Red, which looked disorganized early in the season, seems to have finally found its stride. This is largely due to leaders such as senior captain Brooke Bestwick and junior center Briana Jentner stepping up and making their presences known. Bestwick had two assists in this past weekend’s win against Yale, and played an excellent defensive game. “We have tremendous leadership with Bestwick, Jentner, and Ellis,” said Davidson. “I just attribute [our recent success] to the leadership and character of the players.”Archived article by Michael Pandolfini

After a disappointing loss last weekend to Buffalo, the men’s polo team was scheduled to saddle up against the University of Virginia tomorrow night at 8 p.m. at the Oxley Equestrian Center. The women’s team was slated to host Virginia tonight at 7:30 p.m. However both matches will be played at a later date. The Red found out about the canceled games at the end of practice last night. The players had been looking forward to the match for some time. “They were really psyched” head coach David Eldredge ’81 said. Of the news, Eldredge stated that, “this really has been a disastrous month for UVA.” According to Eldredge, of UVA’s men’s team, “one of the players has pneumonia, one has bronchitis, and another’s family home just burnt down this past week.” “It was a deflation of all the practice we’ve had,” said Eldredge. “But, we’re very glad we are not in UVA’s shoes right now.” This weekend’s match would have undoubtedly been an intense and exciting match. Currently, the Cavs rank No.1 in the country with the Red trailing closely behind in the No. 2 spot. Eldredge is attempting to set up a match against Valley Forge Military Academy in place of the regularly scheduled game, but “we haven’t gotten confirmation yet.” “They had an open spot, so we’re trying to set that up,” Eldredge said. UVA’s women’s team has also seen its share of tragic events lately. The captain of the team underwent emergency heart surgery this week. The Red has tied Virginia once this season, and won 19-9 during the second meeting between the two clubs. These recent events will give the Red a nice break for the weekend, but fans can be guaranteed that the high ranking men’s and women’s teams will play a critical match against UVA before the National Championships later in the season.
