For students from non-traditional majors looking to build transferable skills for the professional workplace, choosing classes can be overwhelming. Two Cornell undergraduates and two recent graduates offered tips for ways to gain transferable skills for the workplace through Cornell’s many courses.
Hairstyles like “white or Asian people with dreadlocks or box braids, at a time when Black people wearing those styles will have them kicked out of school or fired from their jobs. Some academics talk about this as loving Black culture, but not Black people,” Rooks said.
“I think COVID-19 has impacted everything for sure,” Simms said. “But at the same time, there’s nothing more you can do than to work hard and put your best foot forward.”
“A lot of these algorithms that have been developed, whether they are in healthcare or policing or visual recognition, are basically including the biases of the people who develop them,” Okolo said.
“This is a time where everyone should put partisanship aside to enact, at the very least, common-sense measures to protect our citizens,” Mitrano said.
“I think that was the beginning of the decline of my mental health — which for most Cornell students isn’t necessarily great to begin with.”
“The roiling U.S. labor market was already in a transitional outlook pre-pandemic as a result of external forces,” Israel said.
Although necessary to reduce infections, Papachryssanthou compared such [health department] bulletins to “Scarlet Letters,” which have significant long-term impacts because “people just won’t forget that someone was infected there.”
“The online ecommerce experience is competing with the in-store experience,” Makar said. “It’s going to be as good or better of an experience than it is in store. Ultimately, stores will adapt how they operate as more business comes through online.”
“You look at the floor, and it looks diverse. But there’s really no interaction with diverse team members — [they] aren’t going to lunch together, they aren’t collaborating together, they are not called on in team meetings …They’re kind of isolated.”
