W. B-Ball Wins First Road Games

Prior to last weekend, the last time the Red won a game away from Newman Arena was over ten months ago when Cornell beat Dartmouth for the right to play in the NCAA tournament. The women’s basketball team finally ended the away losing streak, beating Brown, 74-62, and Yale, 57-42, which were also the team’s first wins outside of New York in over 11 months.
The Red (6-9, 2-1 Ivy) opened the weekend at Brown (3-14, 1-2) where it had its highest scoring game of the season with 74 points. Junior captain Lauren Benson also had her highest scoring performance of the season, leading the Red with a career-high 20 points.

Cornell Splits Roadtrip Against Yale, Brown

After struggling against Yale on Friday night, Cornell (10-9-2, 6-6-2 ECAC) fought back on Saturday to defeat the Bears, 6-0. Despite losing to the Bulldogs, the Red still stands ahead of both the Bulldogs and the Bears in ECAC Hockey rankings with an accumulated 14 points. These two Ivy League games were crucial for the women’s hockey team in hopes of securing its top-8 position for the playoffs.
“I thought it was a good team effort … I feel our team is getting a lot closer because we put our heart and soul into it, and even though we didn’t win, we still have each other,” said freshman forward Kendice Ogilvie. “Even though it wasn’t the best outcome, we had to move on. “

Devin Scores Twice in Win Over Struggling Bears

Cornell bounced back from its 4-3 loss Friday night with a resounding 5-1 win over Brown on Saturday. Sophomore forward Joe Devin led the way for the Red, notching two goals, including the game winner. Michael Kennedy, Blake Gallagher and Sean Collins each added a goal and an assist to help Cornell cruise to victory.
Head coach Mike Schafer ’86 and his players were very pleased with the way the team (14-2-3, 9-1-2 ECAC Hockey) responded after Friday’s defeat.

“It was really important mentally to come out the way we did after the way we played [Friday],” Schafer said. “It was just a much better performance. It was a good bounce-back here tonight. We played the way we are capable of.”

Yale Brings League’s Best Offense to Lynah Rink

“At this point in the season, playing as well as we are, anything less than four points isn’t really good enough,” said men’s hockey junior netminder Ben Scrivens, “especially playing two Ivy League teams, which could definitely help our chances for an Ivy League title this year.”
This is the attitude of the men’s hockey team going into this weekend, as Cornell (13-1-3, 8-0-2 ECAC Hockey) prepares to host two teams that would seem less than threatening to the No. 3 team in the nation: Yale (11-5-1, 6-3-1) tonight and Brown (1-12-4, 1-6-3) tomorrow night.
On a 10-game unbeaten streak after last weekend’s sweep at Union and Rensselaer, the Red is looking to defend its home rink in front of the Red’s student fans who have returned to Ithaca after the break.

Women’s Hockey Eyes Sweep of Ivy Rivals

Coming off a two game winning streak, the women’s hockey team is heading on the road this weekend to play two of its ECAC challengers – Yale tonight and Brown on Saturday afternoon. Having faced both of these teams earlier in the season, the Red is hoping to secure repeat victories and obtain a weekend sweep.
“After doing good against them, it gives us confidence that we need to pull through against these two,” said sophomore defenseman Sam Wauer. “We’re not going to be going in scared. We’re going to have to execute what we need to do … I think it is a confidence boost. After playing them once, we know now what they are going to do system-wise.”

Despite Hard Losses, Red Refuses to Lose Confidence

It’s hard to imagine that the volleyball team is in good spirits — not only did the Red drop two matches last weekend to fall to No. 4 in the Ivy standings, they’re also heading right back on the road this weekend to face Brown today and first-place Yale tomorrow. But head coach Deitre Collins-Parker and the rest of the team was so buoyed by their play in the five-set loss to Penn on Saturday that the confidence is flowing — even as they’re about to take on a Bulldog squad that handed the Red a resounding 25-16, 25-12, 25-13 defeat just two weeks ago.

Ivy Leader Brown Shuts Down Cornell Attack

The football team started Saturday afternoon’s contest against Brown on a positive note. It was what happened later that explains why the Red returned to Ithaca with its third consecutive loss of the season, losing 27-7.
Brown quarterback Michael Dougherty survived a shaky first quarter to lead his squad, accumulating 285 yards through the air to complement two touchdowns. Both scores went to wide reciever Bobby Sewall, who made 11 catches for 181 yards.
“I thought [Bobby Sewall] was good,” said head coach Jim Knowles ’87. “But I think we’ve faced better. “

Yale Pounds Red, Solidifies No.1 Ranking in Ivies

Judging by the level of play and results, it was almost as if two different teams were representing Cornell in Newman Arena over the weekend. On Friday, the volleyball team was thoroughly outplayed by a dominant Yale squad, 25-16, 25-12, 25-13. The next day, the Red showed some jitters early on, but rebounded quickly to take a close match from Brown, 18-25, 25-21, 27-25, 25-23.
The Bulldogs (13-4, 7-1 Ivy League) sit atop the Ivy standings and proved their worth with a one-sided win over Cornell (7-11, 6-2 Ivy). The Bulldogs sported a well-balanced attack — six players finished with more than five kills. Laurel Johnson led Yale’s attack with nine kills and Alexis Crusey and Cat Dailey finished with eight. Ally Mendenhall totaled 37 assists for the Bulldogs.
