Freshman attackman Zach Ward’s buzzer-beating goal at the end of the game powered the Red to a 6-5 victory over Colgate. Cornell welcomes the Bulldogs to Ithaca on Saturday in a rematch of last year’s victory.
It was a series of ups and downs, but unfortunately for the men’s hockey team, the downs proved too much, as evidenced by a 6-3 game three loss to No.1 Quinnipiac in the ECAC quarterfinals.
The Cornell men’s lacrosse team improved to 2-2 with a win this past weekend, upsetting No. 17 Virginia in a 14-10 effort.
With the season on the brink, the men’s hockey team shocked No. 1 Quinnipiac, 5-4, in the second game of the best-of-three series, forcing game three on Sunday afternoon.
No. 17 Virginia (3-3, 0-1 ACC) is much better than what its record might indicate, and the Red (1-2, 0-0 Ivy) will have to come out fighting in order to be successful.
Survive and advance; that’s how the motto goes. It doesn’t matter how you win at this point in the season — a gritty fight to the buzzer, or a demoralizing blowout. Anything will do.

Cornell basketball freshman guard Matt Morgan was placed on the second team All-Ivy for the 2015-16 season. He led the league in scoring, averaging 18.9 points on 41.4 percent shooting. Morgan also added 3.1 rebounds and 2.0 assists. His 1.4 steals per game were good for third in the conference. “He was unbelievable,” said head coach Bill Courtney.
Just like in last year’s defeat, Cornell men’s lacrosse could not muster much offense against Albany’s goalie. Great Danes’ goalkeeper Blaze Riorden finished the game with 18 saves, limiting the Red to just eight goals. Cornell lost the game, 12-8, worsening its season record to 1-2. “It’s not like we weren’t getting opportunities,” said senior midfielder Ryan Matthews. “I think we could have finished more of our shots and taken advantage of more of those.”
Matthews had two goals in the match.
The men of the hockey team get revenge on the team that had knocked them out of the playoffs for the past two years.
