Students have the opportunity to delve into various unique physical education offerings at Cornell.
For the first time since before the COVID-19 pandemic, Cornell students are taking their swim tests, which are required for graduation.
Cornell Outdoor Education’s BIPOC rock climbing class has garnered praise and opposition for its inclusion of primarily students from minority backgrounds.
Treadmills and fitness studios across campus may be empty as social distancing takes hold in Ithaca, but Cornellians are still exercising — some on their own and others through virtual fitness programs.
Running across the Arts Quad from spinning class to sociology lecture might not always lend the best body odor, and fitting physical education classes into a jam-packed schedule can be challenging. However, Cornell students are not alone in their quest to fulfill the two-course P.E. requirement.
The University’s P.E. class roster includes courses inspired by cultures across the globe, from Filipino Kali to Brazilian Jiu Jitsu.
“About two-thirds” of Cornell PE classes have a fee associated with the course, according to Frederick Debruyn, associate director of Physical Education. This fee must be paid to enroll in the class, and students at Cornell must take 2 semesters of PE in order to graduate.
