Amidst the Pandemic, Masita is Earning Its Spot on the Collegetown Scene

When Jin Kim and Jeesoo Lee opened Masita this past winter, they (like the rest of us) had no way of knowing what was right around the corner. The coronavirus hit restaurant owners incredibly hard, and many Ithaca businesses were forced to close their doors and regroup. Kim and Lee, having only been open for a month, were at a major disadvantage, as they lacked the dedicated fanbase of other established restaurants. Fortunately, Masita was not their first rodeo. Back in South Korea, the two women were longtime business partners and owned multiple successful restaurants together.

While some Cornellians swear by That’s How I Roll, others contend that Plum Tree is the best, and some refuse to even step into a sushi restaurant in this town at all. But alas, I believe that I have found the winner: Mitsuba.

When considering price, flavor and convenience, the new sushi from Wegmans is relegated to being a snack or meal that can tide you over, but it definitely should not be the first choice you look for when you’re buying food at a Cornell eatery.

The “I” Behind That’s How I Roll

That’s How I Roll opened on North campus in April of last year, joining the ranks of mobile vendors like Collegetown Crêpes and Louie’s Lunch. At approximately 10 dollars a piece, its sushi burrito hybrids are filled with a generous assortment of ingredients that would typically go into a maki roll (rice, fish and vegetables in a seaweed wrap) and offer an on-the-go, relatively affordable alternative to the typical sushi dine-in experience.

Being the ultimate foodie and nutrition junkie that I am, I stood in front of the new Green Café on College Ave. and small tear trickled down my cheek. I opened the glorious doors to my new haven and the smells of salvation exploded in my face.
