“The biggest adjustment was preventing the big innings that we gave up in game one,” said assistant coach Janet Maguire. “Our pitchers were able to work their way out a few times with runners in scoring position to give our offense a chance.”
The Red went across town Tuesday to take on Division III I.C.
In game one, the Red hit five home runs, with junior Bridgette Rooney hitting two of her own. Junior pitcher Katie Lew held Dartmouth to only five hits the entire game.
Columbia got out to a hot start against the Red, shutting Cornell out in the first game and winning 12-0.
An offensive explosion against Colgate is a good sign for the Red and its injury-addled pitching staff.
Despite an abysmal overall record, the Red is off to a hot start in Ivy play.
“League play … is where everything matters the most, so staying focused while enjoying the game will get us ready,” B. Rooney said. “A good night’s rest in our own beds versus another night on the road won’t hurt, either.”
As Cornell prepares to renovate and expand the North Campus housing area, members of Cornell’s club sports expressed concern that the project’s impending destruction of the Appel Fields — an outdoor sports space — will put the future of club sports in jeopardy.
“The losses are tough,” said Head Coach Julie Farlow ’97. “But they highlight weaknesses and what needs to be cleaned up in order to win.”
Despite being projected by pre-season polls to end the year at the bottom of the conference, a pair of wins over the Tigers helped the Red best expectations.
