Responding to national events or fighting for change on campus, Cornellians have fostered a strong culture of activism in Ithaca over the past decade.
Whether it’s draining a fishbowl at Level B or heading to Loco for karaoke night, taking part in the local Ithaca bar scene is a rite of passage that many Cornell students are familiar with. Not many students, however, know much about what happens behind the bar. The Sun caught up with three student bartenders who work three of collegetown’s watering holes — Hideaway, Loco Cantina, and Level B. Since the age limit for bartending is 18 years old in New York State, bartending in college is a viable opportunity for many students. Students initially seek out bartending for a variety of reasons. For Stephanie Neitlich ’21, a bartender at Hideaway, bartending began with a goal to push herself in a more extroverted direction.
Like every other student, Melissa Mahannah ’18 was admitted to Cornell after writing an essay and requesting letters of recommendation. But unlike most undergraduate students, she was also a full-time employee at Cornell when she applied.
After weeks of exams, papers and responsibilities, fall break offers a welcome respite for students to destress and relax. Many Cornell students decide to go home or get away from campus, though some students simply live too far away or choose not to step off campus for a quick vacation.
Early Friday morning, the Cornell University Police Department responded to a report of an armed robbery near Uris Library on Ho Plaza, where suspects brandished a gun and took the belongings of two Cornell students. The robbery was reported at 2:49 a.m., according to the press release.
For many first-year students, this Sunday’s Fall ClubFest will be the first introduction to Cornell’s many student groups — from dance troupes to professional fraternities, dozens of organizations will be performing, showcasing their activities and recruiting new members.
“In college, I think this is one of the first times where you have a little bit of freedom in managing your own finances and budgeting … and so starting early kind of leads you to develop very good habits that I think are very important long-term,” said Bogan.
