The nearly $1 million reported by Mitrano would bring her total for the campaign to $1.1 million dollars, while her opponent, incumbent Rep. Tom Reed (R-N.Y.) has raised $2.6 million total for the election cycle up to June 30.
Democratic congressional candidate Tracy Mitrano J.D. ’95 discussed her support of legalizing recreational marijuana, the importance of reducing the burden of student loans.
Tracy Mitrano J.D. ’95 hosted a town hall on Friday afternoon, inviting questions from community members from Tompkins and some surrounding counties. Questions mainly focused on domestic issues, including infrastructure, reproductive rights and the economy.
Mitrano worked as the Director of Information Technology Policy at Cornell University from 2001 to 2014. According to her website, she is responsible for some of the “first-generation” higher education information security policies.
My name is Tracy Mitrano. I am the Democratic challenger running for Congress in New York’s 23rd District against Rep. Tom Reed (R-NY). I write to urge every Cornellian to take the midterm elections seriously. Most Cornellians graduate in four years. Tom Reed (R-NY), who represents New York’s 23rd district (including Ithaca), has been in office for twice that. But you wouldn’t know from the jeering Ithacans filling his town halls. Suffice it to say readers of The Cornell Daily Sun are far from Reed’s core constituency. And yet Cornell, as with Ithaca at large, is a blue speck amid a red sea.
“Once you’re outside that five miles [outside downtown Ithaca], it’s a crapshoot as to whether you have connectivity or not,” she said.
“When that tool is deployed appropriately the bad guys will know that we mean business,” Reed said.
“By supporting this bill, Congressman Reed just voted to block thousands of his constituents in New York, and millions of people around the country, from essential health care.”
The American Health Care Act is a misguided piece of legislation that, if enacted, could result in the loss of health care for tens of millions, increased premiums for the elderly, reduced protections for those with pre-existing conditions (encompassing everything from asthma to pregnancy to cancer to prior sexual assault), and signal the return of lifetime limits and reductions in employer coverage. This is a bad bill for America, and a bad bill for New York’s 23rd Congressional District.
